Santa's Reindeer

We all know that Santa and his sleigh travel through the night sky delivering presents to good little girls and boys.

But do you know all the reindeer's names?

Santa’s team of flying reindeer who help pull Santa Claus’ sleigh and help him deliver Christmas Gifts on time every year to good little girls and boys

How he travels around the world so quickly and never misses out the good children is unknown but we are all thankful that he does.

Santa’s reindeer were first named in an 1823 poem “A Visit from St.Nicholas” (also known as “The Night Before Christmas”) and this is reputedly why reindeer became so popular at Christmas.

Originally there were 8 flying reindeer mentioned in the poem “miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer"

They were:

• Dasher


• Dancer


• Prancer


• Vixen


• Comet


• Cupid


• Donner (who was originally called Dunder)


• Blitzen (originally named Blixem)

 

Rudolph

However there is one very special reindeer that wasn’t mentioned and if it wasn’t for him Santa would never have been able to see through the dark night sky. He is of course the most famous reindeer of all

Rudolph (the red nosed reindeer)

The original story of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer was written by Robert L May and published in a book given by a department store to children at Christmas time

Poor Rudolph was ignored by the other reindeer because he had a glowing red nose. One foggy Christmas Eve night Santa was finding it increasingly difficult to fly around the world.

He stopped at Rudolph’s house to deliver presents and noticed that his glowing red nose lit up the dark bedroom. Santa asked Rudolph to lead the sleigh for the remainder of the night and his glowing red nose would show the way.
Rudolph was more than happy to oblige and returned home a hero after helping Santa through the night sky.

Now every christmas eve when Santa's ready to deliver his presents Rudolph leads the way to ensure that no matter the weather Santa and his Sleigh will always deliver their gifts.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
