Christmas Celebrations Worldwide

Not all Christmases are celebrated as we do in the UK.

In the UK it tends to be cold and invariably wet here and if we’re lucky a few snowflakes on Christmas morning completes our perfect idea of Christmas.

However if you live in Australia you would most probably celebrate Christmas Day with a barbecue on the beach with the sun shining.

Different countries have different traditions –

In the UK it’s early to bed for the children on Christmas Eve, after leaving out the mince pie and milk and a few carrots for the reindeer. Whispering together and listening to hear if Santa has in fact arrived.

Christmas Morning dawns with parcels under the tree, family visiting to exchange gifts and a Christmas turkey cooking ready for Christmas Day dinner.

In France Christmas is called ‘Noel’ and Santa Claus is ‘Pierre Noel’. Everyone in France has a Christmas tree and many outdoor fir trees are also decorated with lights on all night.

In Germany, Father Christmas is called 'Der Weihnachtsmann' and he brings presents in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve (December 24th), after people have been to church.
The presents are then found under the Christmas tree. One person in the family will ring a bell and call everyone to come to the room. Unlike UK on Christmas Day, fish (carp) or goose will be cooked.

In Hungary, Santa Clause (Winter-grandfather) (Tel-apo or Mikulas) comes on the 6th of December. All children must clean their shoes and and put them outside next to the door or window before they go to sleep. Next day red bags containing candies and/or small toys appear in them.

In Russia, is most commonly celebrated on 7th January when ‘Father Frost’ brings presents to the children. Special Christmas food includes cakes, pies and 'meat dumplings'.

In Latvia, Father Christmas bring presents on each of the 12 days of Christmas, beginning on Christmas Eve. The presents are put under the Christmas Tree. Christmas Day Dinner is cooked brown peas with bacon (pork) sauce, small pies, cabbage and sausage.

Whether we celebrate on the same day or in the same way is immaterial. It is after all a time of reflection and family.
